Food The city actually dates back to 1918 when a shop opened in Greeneville, Tennessee, but the official launch of K-VA-T Food Stores took place in 1955 when the founder Jack C. Smith - with his father Curtis and uncle Earl - opened the first store in Grundy, Virginia. Since then, the City of Food has grown steep through the acquisition of several Piggly Wiggly operations in Southwest Virginia and East Kentucky, along with Quality Foods / Food City, White Shops, Winn Dixie and BI-LO in Tennessee eastern. The company has also grown steadily expanding into new market areas while remodeling and replacing existing sites as needed to better serve their customers.
It is owned by K-VA-T Food Stores, a private-owned family-owned and resident enterprise (only 13% through ESOP) based in Abingdon, Virginia. Since August 2017, K-VA-T has 131 retail outlets (121 city grocery stores, 10 Super Dollar stores along with 5 small shops and 2 Food City Wine & Spirits) Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia. The chain includes 100 pharmacies in the store and 87 gas stations.
