Financial problems caused the chain to close down many markets in the late 1990s and early 2000s. William Zimmerman founded Pick 'N' Save Corporation in 1950 in Culver City, California. Until 1985, it operated 90 stores in California and six other Western states of the United States. In 1991, the company changed its name to MacFrugals.

 

In Los Angeles, in the 1980s, there was at least one store in Vine Street, Hollywood, operating under the name of Pick 'N' Save. Later it expanded to Southwest and South and left both markets in the late 1990s, Consolidated Stores Corporation) bought the remaining MacFrugals stores for $ 995 million in stock.
